The Amazing
Spiderman
Spiderman is one of the most popular superheroes in the
world, with a wide ranging cultural influence. Spiderman
first made his appearance in 1962 in Amazing Fantasy
#15. In the first story we meet Peter Parker, a lonely,
unpopular high school student, more interested in books
than saving the world. But, thanks to a radioactive
spider, Peter Parker develops the strength and agility
of a spider. Like any high school student would when
faced with this situation, Peter Parker sews himself a
red bodysuit, develops a device to eject webbing, and
becomes a professional wrestler. Unfortunately, Peter
Parker is more interested in using his newfound skill to
make money than to help anyone. When he passes on the
chance to catch a thief, the thief ends up killing his
beloved uncle. With this blow, Spiderman’s transition
from teenager to superhero is complete.
Spiderman, more than just comic books
The above story was introduced as a one-time experiment.
After the release of Amazing Fantasy #15, however, sales
surged. Spiderman proved to be phenomenally successful
and helped revive Marvel’s lagging fortunes. A franchise
was born, spawning dozens of comic book series, cartoons
and video games.
The latest incarnation of the Spiderman series has been
a series of extremely successful movies staring Tobey
Maguire as Spiderman and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane
Watson. The first movie, released in 2002, showed us the
start of Spiderman’s career – although this time his
transformation was caused by a genetically modified
spider instead of a radioactive spider. With his
newfound powers, Spiderman finds himself face to face
with the Green Goblin, played by Willem Dafoe. Riding
the on success of the first movie, Spiderman returned in
2004 in Spiderman 2. This time, Spiderman faces off
against Doctor Octopus, a multi-tentacled experiment
gone wrong. Spiderman 3 is scheduled for release in
2007. This time is set to face his biggest enemy yet –
himself in his black venom suit.
Back to
the comic books
Despite Spiderman’s success outside the realm of comic
books, at the end of the day Spiderman is still a comic
book superhero. In order to truly enjoy Spiderman in all
his glory, you need to look to his comic book stories.
Of course, finding all of Spiderman’s comic books can be
a daunting task. Spiderman stories can be found in a
dizzying array of series. After Amazing Fantasy,
Spiderman was given his own series, aptly titled The
Amazing Spiderman. He can also be found in Spectacular
Spiderman, Sensational Spiderman, and even Ultimate
Spiderman (not to be confused with Spiderman Unlimited).
If you are trying to find copies of older Spiderman
comics, be sure to check out popular online auction
sites. However, you should be prepared to pay for the
pleasure of owning an early Spiderman comic: early
editions of The Amazing Spiderman can go for thousands
of dollars! Obviously, Spiderman is not just for kids
anymore. But don’t worry – slightly later versions of
The Amazing Spiderman only go for a few hundred dollars.
